Hillsborough understands just how important it is to nurture the spirit and potential of each child. Learning at Hillsborough knows no limits. Our unique bridging program provides both individualized and accelerated education, motivating students of all levels to excel. Students who are assessed to be working at an accelerated level are given the opportunity to ‘bridge’ to the next grade level(s) in both math and reading. We adopted this program over six years ago and the results have been remarkable. This program has allowed us to put into practice our educational philosophy, which is to begin where the learner is and to then adjust the pace to the learner.
Our accelerated curriculum features the newly revised Open Court reading program, a program that Hillsborough has proudly used for over 20 years, due to its enormous success in teaching the basics of phonics, language arts, and ultimately reading. The recent updates to our math (Sadlier Oxford), science, and social studies (just this year) keep our students up to date with the latest advances in education, ensuring their ultimate educational success.
Each year, Hillsborough students continue to achieve Stanford 10 test scores and API rankings far beyond local and state standards. More importantly , however, our team of excellent teachers captures creative minds and inspires a love for learning.
Students demonstrate high motivation, integrity, initiative, intellectual depth, leadership qualities, and exceptional judgment. A wide variety of enrichment programs help children experience success early and often as they acquire the personal and academic skills necessary to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Our theater arts program offers students the opportunity to further develop their theatrical abilities, as they enthusiastically partake in major productions. Our all-school choir (1st – 8 th grade) performs regularly at school functions, including our annual Spring Concert. Our recent addition of an instrumental band has also been extremely well received and provides yet another avenue for students to shine. Enrichments included in the regular school day for students from Kindergarten through 8 th grade include the following classes: physical education, Spanish, music, art, science lab, and library. The addition of character education to our regular daily curriculum ensures that students come to understand the importance of ‘good character’ and allows them to practice values such as courtesy, kindness, respect, and forgiveness on a daily basis.
Sensitive to the unique needs of junior high students, our teachers have worked hard to create an atmosphere where students are able to discover both their own individuality and sense of belonging to the school community. In addition to a stringent academic program, junior high students have the opportunity to choose form a variety of electives such as journalism (newspaper), puppetry, cricket, cross country running, cooking, photography, drama, sewing, woodwork, and band.
